  8.  AB    OBJECTIVES: to raise awareness and provide basic elements to members of
  9.        NGOs on the issue of vaccine trials and organization of cohorts in
  10.        Brazil, in order to follow up, criticize, support and give autonomous
  11.        opinions on the subject. METHODS: communication group exercises.
  12.        Initially we discuss about feelings and previous experiences on other
  13.        vaccines, introducing the concepts of therapeutic, prophylactic,
  14.        efficacy, access. Then we expose basic facts on vaccine trials (Phases
  15.        I/II/III, etc) and the process in Brazil. Afterwards we discuss some
  16.        examples of informed consent and the role of NGOs. Finally we ask to
  17.        fill a questionnaire for evaluation. RESULTS: In 1993 we performed six
  18.        workshops with 10 participants each (average). The evaluation showed the
  19.        will and need for further discussion in and among NGOs and with health
  20.        Institutions. DISCUSSIONS & CONCLUSIONS: health workers showed
  21.        increasing interest on the workshop which could be also useful for
  22.        members of cohorts.
